A Foundation of Mindfulness

When it comes to self-discovery and personal development mindfulness is foundational.

The practice of Mindfulness is an important, foundational tool to unlock self-discovery and personal development. It has the power to transform how you see and experience the world for the better.

What is Mindfulness?

There are a variety of definitions for mindfulness but at its core Mindfulness is the practice of noticing your thoughts and feelings in the present moment, as you experience them, without judgment. It’s a cognitive skill you can cultivate by being intentionally aware and fully present in the moment as you objectively notice the thoughts you have, name the feelings you experience, and observe sensations you feel in your body.

The practice of mindfulness has its origins in Buddhist meditation techniques. Over the last decade or so, mindfulness has surged in popularity in the United States. Today its principles are widely used in psychology, psychiatry, mental health therapies, executive leadership development, and more.

The Benefits of Mindfulness

A growing number of clinical studies have shown mindfulness techniques can improve both physical and mental health.

The true strength of mindfulness is making it a consistent practice, but even one-off mindfulness exercises can be incredibly beneficial. By bringing your attention to the present moment you cultivate your awareness skills – the knowledge and ability to focus your attention on your inner processes and experiences.

Mindfulness helps you train your brain to recognize how you are feeling in the current moment objectively and without judgment. This cultivates a sense of familiarity and control of your consciousness, and where your attention is intentionally focused.

Instead of your thoughts or feeling spiraling, mindfulness allows you to calmly notice your experience and pull your brain out of a reactive state – where you might feel helpless, overwhelmed, or out of control – and into a responsive state – where you can act thoughtfully and intentionally.

Mindfulness enhances emotional regulation, by helping you indentify your emotions and how you consciously choose to respond to them. It’s also a tool to avoid self-criticism boost self-compassion.

These mental and emotional benefits result in physical benefits as well. Mindfulness can help you manage moods and stress, and can even lower blood pressure, improve sleep quality, reduce chronic pain, and boost the immune system. Mindfulness is also a useful tool for cultivating better eating habits and combating addiction.

The skillset mindfulness cultivates helps you not only understand yourself better, it can also help you understand others and how you engage with life.

How Mindfulness Exercises Help

Cultivating mindfulness is an ongoing practice. Mindfulness exercises are intentional activities where you train your mind to focus your attention on your thoughts, feelings, and experience in the present moment.

Some mindfulness exercises include:

  • Meditation. There are many traditions of meditation, but it essentially involves sitting quietly and focusing your attention inward.
  • Body scanning. This exercise involves slowly and sequentially checking in with each part of your body from head to toe and noticing how it feels.
  • Breath work. Often paired with meditation, breath work involves bringing your attention to slowly breathing in and out.
  • Nature and art activities with a focus on mindfulness. Whether out in nature or expressing yourself creatively, mindfulness draws your attention to the experience in the present moment.
  • Peer counseling, coaching, and mentoring can also involve mindfulness to help you gain deeper self-insight. This can foster transformational personal development and progress to your goals and sense of fulfillment.

Just like with physical exercise, the more you exercise mindfulness as a mental skill the easier it will become — like muscle memory. Soon, you’ll find yourself being mindful in your everyday life and activities, not just during dedicated mindfulness exercises.
